The world is still a shitty place for women, but imagine not being able to do any of these things today:
1. Go to school
The implementation of free and compulsory universal primary education (UPE) in the 70s helped increase the number of girls who enrolled in school.
2. Work in an office
Let’s be clear, women have always worked but working in an office isn’t something that we have always done. Things started to change in the 19th century after the industrial revolution. Till today, women still face discrimination in the workplace just for being women.
3. Take birth control pills
Birth control pills only became more accessible to Nigerian women in the past decade.
4. Own a bank account
Before the 70s, women did not have the right to own a bank account. They had to be affiliated with a man to access the services banks provide.
Women of southern and eastern Nigeria gained their voting rights in 1954, but it wasn’t until 1979 that women from northern Nigeria were allowed to vote.
6. Have an abortion.
A lot of women around the world still don’t have access to safe abortions.
