7 Of The Most Read “Man Like” Episodes

December 20, 2020

What does it mean to be a man? Surely, it’s not one thing. It’s a series of little moments that add up.

“Man Like” is a weekly Zikoko series documenting these moments to see how it adds up. It’s a series for men by men, talking about men’s issues. We try to understand what it means to “be a man” from the perspective of the subject of the week.

1) It’s Almost As If We Have A Generation Of Broken Men – Man Like Aproko Doctor

Have men forgotten their roles as nurturers? Is there a new wave of men who feel that brute force is the only way to enforce masculinity? Aproko Doctor talks about a new wave of men who are going about being a man the wrong way. Read here.

2) I’m Scared Of The Nigerian Police — Man Like Ezra

To be a Nigerian man is to constantly be wary of the police. Even when you’re innocent. It’s even worse when you’re successful. Ezra talks about avoiding police wahala, living life on his own terms while balancing the responsibilities of being the first child. Read here.

3) Men Say “I Love You,” But It’s Not How You Expect – Man Like Jaja

Do men tell each other “I love you?” Jaja says the answer is yes. However it’s not just said the way we expect. Read here to see how men express love to each other.

4) Attending An All Boys School Made Me Unable To Talk To Women — Man Like Justin UG

People don’t like same-sex schools for a lot of reasons and Justin UG unpacks one of the major reasons — the inability to properly relate with the opposite sex. Read all about it here.

5) “Being A Man Is Understanding Your Privilege” — Man Like Derin

Masculinity comes with privileges. Period. Part of being a man is understanding these privileges and defining how you use them. Derin walks us on a profound journey of how men should use their privileges in helping others. Read about it here.

6) Men Cry But Only In Safe Spaces – Man Like Ozzy Agu

In this episode, Ozzy tells us two major things: Men cry. But they only cry in places where they are safe. Why? Read here for more.

7) “I Was Bullied For Liking Beyoncé Over Football” – Man Like Chuuzus

When men deviate from socially acceptable definitions of what it means to be “a man,” what usually follows is violence. Chuuzus tells us about how he was bullied for simply having a different taste from others. You don’t want to miss this one.
